Bad News Birds

When feathers get freaky

By now, some of us may suspect that Naturalist Marianne has a slight penchant for the macabre, as often as she trots out all things icky, slimy and slithery. This month, prepare for something a little bit "Edgar Allen Poe" as her infamous feathered friends perch in her cabin at Rusell Crossroads. Nevermore!

"Bad News Birds"
A multitude of birds color our world and fill it with song. Poems and paintings have been inspired by the beauty of birds for centuries. But, some birds have been long associated with superstitions and bad luck. Visit the Naturalist’s Cabin this month to meet some of these “bad news birds” and learn about the myths and legends that have surrounded them in many cultures. We will compare and contrast the species that are harbingers of joy and those that are the creatures of curses. Live animals – bring your camera. No charge – everyone is welcome!

If you have questions for Marianne, she can be contacted at 256.496.2710 or
[email protected].

It's fall, y'all!
Join us on a crisp morning jaunt and note the changing of the seasons. Changes are happening everywhere as the animals and plants of Russell Forest prepare for upcoming low temperatures. We will spend time learning about how the forest changes into its autumn wardrobe and discover the amazing features that allow this transition to happen. Impromptu discoveries always abound as we spend time in this outdoor classroom. Learn while you exercise!

Advance registration required! There is a $10 fee for this program. Please contact our Naturalist at 256.496.2710 to inquire and to register.

For all Guided Nature Tours: It is recommended that participants have a moderate fitness level and are able to stand or walk for at least two hours. Walking pace will be relaxed with frequent stops. Comfortable, seasonally-appropriate clothing and shoes are advised. Binoculars and cameras are welcome. Please note, there are no bathrooms on the Forest Trails.
