Get up close and personal with
eagles, horses and Mom in May

Early in the month, Marianne is bringing a gentle horse for the kids to touch and learn about, and a special opportunity to celebrate moms in the beauty of Russell Forest. On Memorial Day Weekend, a local favorite returns as she brings the eagles from Auburn University to the Naturalist Cabin. Don't miss it!

Derby Day Kids' Event
Saturday, May 3 - 9am-1pm

Kids aged 5-105 will be racing to the Blacksmith’s Shop at Russell Crossroads to brush, groom and learn about equines in honor of Derby Day. A very gentle, live horse will be available from 9am - 1pm on Saturday, May 3, for kids to groom, examine and discover. Children will learn about safety around horses and also discover the features that make a horse’s body so amazing. Brushes, supplies and stepstools will be on-hand. Visitors are welcome to bring their own apples, carrots or sugary treats for the horse. Although all interactions will be closely guided by Marianne, please assist in supervising your child in this activity. Call Naturalist Marianne Hudson at 256-496-2710 with any questions. No charge!

War Eagles visit Crossroads Memorial Day Weekend!
Saturday, May 24 - 12:30 and 1:30pm

The two eagles that fly at Auburn University’s football games will visit the Naturalist’s Cabin at both 12:30pm and 1:30pm on Saturday, May 24. Choose either presentation time for the perfect opportunity to view both the Bald Eagle and the Golden Eagle up close and learn about the fascinating natural history of these two species. We will discuss the populations of these birds in Alabama, including the dramatic recovery of the Bald Eagle. The amazing power, speed and strength of these birds will be highlighted and we will also discuss how they are trained for their stadium flights. This is an excellent photo opportunity! WAR EAGLE!

Guided Nature Tours
Meet at WILLOW POINT Trailhead
Sunday, May 11 (Mothers Day) - 9am.

Celebrate spring! Celebrate Mom!
We are in the throes of spring and Russell Forest is bursting with life! In May, we will search for and identify native wildflowers. We will also discuss pollination and look for evidence that our trees are reproducing. In honor of moms this weekend, we will also recognize Mothers Day by discussing the never-ending tasks of motherhood through the eyes of forest moms. If you think it’s hard for humans, wait ‘til you hear what wild parents tolerate.

*Moms hike free on Mothers Day!*
