Keeping warm and winter amore in Russell Forest

This month, Marianne shows how the critters stay warm in a chilly Russell Forest, and celebrates Groundhog Day, Valentine's Day and the winter courtship taking place all around us.

Nature Presentations
Naturalist Cabin at Russell Crossroads
Saturday, February 18, 9am to 2pm
Saturday, February 25, 7am to 1pm

It’s Febrrrrruary…put on your layers and stop by the Naturalist’s Cabin to see and touch the fluffy furs that keep Russell Forest residents warm and dry this time of year. For centuries, man has admired and adorned himself with the coats of other creatures. You will see that the functionality of these animal coverings is matched by their beauty. In addition to animal pelts, a living breathing furbearer will be on hand to brag about how warm they are. Static display will highlight interesting facts about our wild neighbors and feature touchable items left behind by forest residents. Presentation includes live animals and is appropriate for all ages.  No charge – everyone is welcome!

Guided Nature Tours
Meet at Wilson Road Trailhead
Saturday, February 18, 3pm

Join Russell Lands On Lake Martin Naturalist Marianne Hudson for an educational foray into our winter forest. In February, we note both Groundhog Day and Valentine’s Day. Groundhogs are a fairly recent addition to Alabama landscapes. Discover why their range is increasing and why we call them whistle-pigs. We will also discuss the love that is in the air at Russell Forest around Valentine’s Day. This month, many species choose their mates and exhibit breeding behavior. It’s not too cold to start thinking about spring, and spring means forest babies. Now, some woodland species are turning their thoughts towards romance. How do they choose and court their partners? Some of the similarities between their habits and ours may surprise you. This energetic hike will offer both learning and exercise.

Appropriate for warmly dressed participants ages 5 - 105.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED! There is a $10 fee for this program. Please contact our Naturalist at 256-496-2710 to inquire and to register.

For all Guided Nature Tours: It is recommended that participants have a moderate fitness level and are able to stand or walk for at least two hours. Walking pace will be relaxed with frequent stops. Comfortable, seasonally appropriate clothing and shoes are advised. Participants may also wish to bring bottled water, sunscreen and insect repellent. Binoculars and cameras are welcome. There are no bathrooms on the Forest Trails.

If you have questions for Marianne, she can be contacted at 256.496.2710 or [email protected].
