Not your grandpa's 5K and 10K

Seventh annual Russell Forest Run February 27

By Robert Gunn, Race Director

I think that the 10K run though the scenic Russell Forest is one of the most unique running events in the Southeast. Participants rave about the course, the views and certainly the after party at The Stables. My daughter, who is a runner, exclaimed as she crossed the finish line a few years ago “THAT WAS BUH-ROOTLE, I’ll be back next year!” (Translation: "brutal".) We hear that from a lot of the runners who run the 10K. Charlie, one of our 70+ runners, loves this run and has already been out training on the course. From the beginning, the race was designed to be that one-of-a-kind experience, in a beautiful place and to benefit the local schools through the Alexander City Schools Education Foundation. This is so much cooler than those mundane, knee-pounding, asphalt road races.

Since the inaugural Russell Forest Run in 2010, it has become a destination run for many who have participated. For years, a group of friends from Pass Christian, Mississippi have joined us for the Russell Forest Run. They heard about the party and decided to do the runs as well. Among their comments are mentions of how great it is that the race helps the local school system!

You know, we are only a few weeks away from the 2016 Russell Forest Run! Saturday, February 27, 2016 at 7:45 in the morning, the cannon will fire to start this year’s 10K run on this USATF certified course (AL10003JD) and will be quickly followed by the 5K at 7:55am. Registration has been open since October at the Russell Forest Run website and on Active.com. Either of these runs is suitable for beginners, but the 5K takes it a little easier! Walkers are welcome, but we do ask that you leave the dogs at home!

The post-race party always features, among other items, our famous grits bar, ice cold beer, a special SpringHouse soup and live music. What are you waiting for? Go ahead and register to be a part of the 2016 Russell Forest Run. Come hang out with us AND support a wonderful cause in the ACSEF! Need more info? Please visit www.RussellForestRun.com and make sure you like us on Facebook! I look forward to seeing you at Russell Crossroads on February 27!
