A sleepy forest? Not exactly.

Some of our forest dwellers may be hibernating, but we all know our White-Tailed Deer are not only plentiful, but very active this time of year. You almost can't drive the roads in the evening without spotting them. This month, Marianne discusses our furry friends, their habits and habitat and leads a tour of their forest home.

Wildlife Presentations
Naturalist Cabin at Russell Crossroads
Saturday, January 2, 9am and again at 11am
Saturday, January 16, 9am and again at 11am

Join Russell Lands On Lake Martin Naturalist Marianne Hudson for an informative presentation featuring accessories that adorn our local White-Tailed Deer. Russell Forest and surrounding area is home to a healthy population of these creatures: find out why they love to live here just as much as we do. A variety of deer antlers, teeth, skins and skulls will be available for inspection and their use and function will be explained. In addition, a full-sized mount of a White-tailed Deer will be displayed for an interesting anatomy lesson. Tips on attracting and repelling deer from your property will be included in a discussion of the type of habitat and food sources that deer require. The issues surrounding whether or not to view these animals as pests has become a nationwide debate. You will be inspired to appreciate the wild dramas being lived out all around us. Program is appropriate for all ages. No charge – everyone is welcome!

Guided Nature Tour
Meet at Willow Point Trailhead
Saturday, January 2, 1pm

Join Naturalist Marianne for an educational foray into our winter forest. The lifestyles of some Russell Forest residents change pace in the winter, but signs of life are everywhere. Find out which denizens are dormant and which are dynamic: cold weather won’t slow us down!  We will search for signs of increasing activity while the sun is high in the sky and the day warms. We will especially be searching for signs of White-tailed Deer activity. This energetic hike is the perfect way to kick-start your standard New Year’s resolutions of exercising and appreciating the beauty that surrounds you.  Appropriate for warmly dressed participants ages 5 - 105.

Advance registration required! There is a $10 fee for this program. Please contact our Naturalist at 256.496.2710 to inquire and to register.

For all Guided Nature Tours: It is recommended that participants have a moderate fitness level and are able to stand or walk for at least two hours. Walking pace will be relaxed with frequent stops. Comfortable, seasonally-appropriate clothing and shoes are advised. Binoculars and cameras are welcome. Please note, there are no bathrooms on the Forest Trails.
