Russell Forest Run a big success despite weather worries

By Robert Gunn, Race Director
There were several nights leading up to the Russell Forest Run where I was awakened by loud claps of thunder and the sound of rain as it slammed against the windows of my house! A long time ago, I learned a lesson in un-controllables – the weather is one of those un-controllables, but it still had me worrying if the fourth annual Russell Forest Run was going to happen. Just an hour or so before the cannon fired to start the race it was still raining, BUT the race did happen!

Hundreds of people gathered in front of Catherine’s Market and ran the 10K or 5K run through the beautiful, although damp, Russell Forest! The smiles of those running, the smiles of those eating grits at The Stables post-race and the smiles of the volunteers washed away (yes, pun intended) all my worry over the weather.

The Russell Forest Run, since it began four years ago, has become an established fund raiser for the Alexander City Schools Education Foundation, giving thousands of dollars to this worthy cause. In a future edition of Explorer, I hope to have an update with the check presentation to the foundation.

To all of those who joined us despite the weather, cheered, volunteered and ran – THANK YOU!
