Sheila Powell and "Jo" White, bakers at Catherine's MarketShopping & Dining
Lake’s finest bakery and best wine selection under one roof at Catherine’s

When Catherine’s Market opened its doors two and a half years ago, it brought something special to the Lake Martin community which hadn’t been seen here before. Premium meats, seafood, poultry and cheeses were now at the fingertips of lake and town residents alike. Two other specialties at Catherine’s are the bakery and wine department. Both bring a vast array of selections and a level of quality previously unseen at Lake Martin or in its surrounding communities. Loyal customers from all over the lake region travel to Catherine’s to seek out incredible breads and pastries, or to peruse our collection of fine wines.

Sheila and Jo baking it up with a smile
Every day, well before sunrise, the ovens come to life at Catherine’s. Two ladies conduct a symphony of flour, yeast, sugar, eggs and all the other ingredients that will combine to produce a mountain of from-scratch, fresh baked goods and tasty goodies. Sheila Powell and Temperance “Jo” White do it all with a smile. Both are graduates of the Culinary Arts program at Trenholm State, and are members of the American Culinary Federation. In other words, they’re the real deal.

Sheila (at left in the photo above) has been with Catherine’s for two years now and is our bread master. From buns to baguettes to batards, Sheila’s craft is expressed in many flavors. French, sourdough, whole wheat, multigrain, rye and even raisin walnut breads grace the shelves, display case and café menu. Yep, the café menu. All of the sandwiches served in our café are made with our own, made-from-scratch, house-made breads. That’s a LOT of bread every day, and we all have Sheila to thank for it.

Jo, as she says her friends call her, is our pastries and desserts specialist. Well, maybe “artist” is a better term. Daily, Jo is at work creating delectable morsels from the to-die-for Turtle Brownies and Rocky Mountain Squares to Key Lime Pies, cakes and our famous cookies “as big as your face.” Jo’s magic also extends to desserts for catered events and conjuring up specialty cakes for birthdays, anniversaries and even full-blown wedding cakes.

Yes, there really is a full-fledged bakery — and bakers — right here in our beautiful, off-the-beaten-path part of the world. It’s a jewel, and you’re sure to be met with a smile from Sheila and Jo. And, when you try a bit of their handiwork, you’re sure to be smiling too.

The Wine Department at Catherine's MarketWine department and Friday tastings worth raising a glass to
Another of the many high points at Catherine’s Market is our extensive wine department. Our collection ranges from fun, fresh and affordable to premium vintage wines from some of the best vintners in the world. Our purveyors work hard to hand select the best wines and best values too. So, whether you’re looking for something for a sunny afternoon on the lake, or the perfect vintage wine to punctuate a very special occasion, come browse the racks at Catherine’s. We’re happy to answer questions and make recommendations too.

As you know, wine is something which is best when shared, and exploring new releases, varietals and winemakers is a great way to expand your personal knowledge of wine. At our Friday evening wine tastings you can accomplish both, and have a heck of a good time doing it. The tastings are usually well-stocked with tables full of friends, conversation and laughter. We always include some cheeses and nibbles to accompany the wines. Every Friday, from 5-7pm, we feature a flight of wines. The tasting is only $5.00, and if you choose to purchase one of the wines in the tasting, we’ll apply that $5.00 to your purchase. How cool is that? So, call up some friends you don’t get to see often enough, and meet at Catherine’s Market on a Friday evening. It’s a great, fun way to celebrate friendships and the arrival of the weekend!
