"Out like a lamb" —
Marianne bringing sheep to celebrate springtime
You may be waiting for the other shoe to drop on whether spring is actually here, but trees are blooming and bulbs are pushing their way to the sky. Maybe there is something to that famous, shadow-fearing rodent's predictions.
This month, naturalist Marianne Hudson will be showcasing some plush, gentle, pettable critters when sheep make their debut at the Naturalist Cabin. Also, this is a great time to enjoy one of Marianne's informative Guided Nature Tours through Russell Forest.

Naturalist Cabin at Russell Crossroads
Saturday, March 12 - 8am to 12pm
Saturday, March 26 - 8am to 12pm
That ol’ Groundhog didn’t pull the wool over our eyes this year… Spring really is just around the corner! To symbolize the gentleness of the coming weather, we will have stoic sheep on display at the Naturalist’s Cabin this month. These large, mature lambs are passive and pettable – giving children of all ages the opportunity to get close to these shy barnyard creatures. Feeling wool in its rawest form will give you a new appreciation for this material’s qualities of softness and warmth. While EWE are meeting the mutton, Marianne will teach you about the domestic breeds of sheep and the features that make them such amazing animals. They are well equipped to escape from predators and perfectly designed to share their wooly coats with humans. Presentation includes live animals and is appropriate for all ages. No charge – everyone is welcome!

Guided Nature Tours
Meet at Wilson Road Trailhead
Saturday, March 12 - 1pm
Saturday, March 26 - 1pm
Join Russell Lands On Lake Martin Naturalist Marianne Hudson for an educational foray into our springtime forest. There are no wild sheep in Russell Forest, but we will be searching for signs left behind by a fairly similar hooved mammal — the White-tailed Deer. As we walk a path, we will be alert for signs of their recent rutting activity and identify the tracks and trails left behind. Skulls, antlers and other bones from deceased deer will be on hand to enhance our learning and aid our understanding of this shy Russell Forest resident. This energetic hike will offer both learning and exercise. Please dress for the weather!
Appropriate for participants ages 5 - 105.
REGISTRATION REQUIRED! There is a $10 fee for this program. Please contact our Naturalist at 256-496-2710 to inquire and to register.
For all Guided Nature Tours: It is recommended that participants have a moderate fitness level and are able to stand or walk for at least two hours. Walking pace will be relaxed with frequent stops. Comfortable, seasonally appropriate clothing and shoes are advised. Participants may also wish to bring bottled water, sunscreen and insect repellent. Binoculars and cameras are welcome. There are no bathrooms on the Forest Trails.
