The Great Outdoors
Kids at "Let's Talk Turkey" presentation"Let's talk turkey" at
Russell Lands On Lake Martin

To “talk turkey” is to speak frankly and plainly about a subject. We’ll be doing just that in honor of November’s most popular bird and local resident: the Eastern Wild Turkey.

Wildlife Presentations
Naturalist Cabin at Russell Crossroads
Sunday, November 7 - 11am – dark
Sunday, November 14 - 11am – dark
Saturday, November 20 - 11am – dark

Meet the one critter that’s on everyone’s Thanksgiving guest list. LIVE TURKEYS of the domestic variety will be at the Naturalist’s Cabin for some serious turkey talk. In addition to these, an assortment of items left behind by the Eastern Wild Turkey will be available for handling and instruction. Turkeys have interesting features including caruncles, a snood, spurs and a beard! Listen to turkey calls and practice your own. Bring a camera and take your child’s Thanksgiving portrait with a full-sized turkey mount. The whole family will enjoy watching the star of Thanksgiving strut its stuff. Appropriate for all ages. No charge – everyone is welcome!

Guided Nature Tours
Meet at Wilson Road Trailhead

Guided Nature Tours will focus on the Wild Turkey’s habitat and lifestyle in Russell Forest. Walkers will search for signs of turkey activity. Preferred roosting sites and dietary choices will be discussed. Participants will learn about the turkey’s natural history and the daily concerns of this bird. It has a lot more to worry about than just Thanksgiving! Learn while you exercise! Appropriate for participants ages 5 - 105.

REGISTRATION REQUIRED! There is a $10 fee for this program. Please contact our Naturalist at 256-496-2710 to inquire and to register.

For all Guided Nature Tours: It is recommended that participants have a moderate fitness level and are able to stand or walk for at least two hours. Walking pace will be relaxed with frequent stops. Comfortable, seasonally appropriate clothing and shoes are advised. Participants may also wish to bring bottled water, sunscreen and insect repellent. Binoculars and cameras are welcome. There are no bathrooms on the Forest Trails.
