The Great Outdoors
Derby Day kids' event at Russell Crossroads
Paint a Pony
Saturday, May 1, 10am-12pm
Kids ages 5-10 will be racing to the Naturalist Cabin at Russell Crossroads to brush, groom and “paint a pony” in honor of Derby Day. A very gentle live horse will be available from 10am – 12pm on Saturday, May 1st for kids to groom, examine and decorate. Children will learn about safety around horses and also discover the features that make a horse’s body so amazing. Brushes, supplies and step-stools will be on-hand.
As children wait for their turn to work with the horse, they will enjoy sketching the scene with provided materials. Children are welcome to bring their own apples, carrots or sugary treats for the horse. Please assist in supervising your child in this activity. Call Naturalist, Marianne Hudson at 256-496-2710 with any questions. No charge!
Sweetface is a friendly mare that enjoys children and long walks in Russell Forest.
Celebrate spring and celebrate Mom with Mother Nature in Russell Forest
The forest is racing to life right now. You can be there to see it. And you should bring your mom along for the walk. This month, we focus on native wildflowers. The color and beauty they bring, after a long winter, signal that life has returned and all is well in Russell Forest.

Saturday, May 29, 9am - Meet at Wilson Road Trailhead
We are in the throes of spring and Russell Forest is bursting with life! In May, we will search for and indentify native wildflowers. We will also discuss pollination and look for evidence that our trees are reproducing. On May 8th and May 9th, we will also recognize Mother’s Day by discussing the never-ending tasks of motherhood through the eyes of forest moms. If you think it’s hard for humans, wait ‘til you hear what wild parents tolerate.
