Spring: "In like a bobcat,
out like a bunny"
After this long, cold winter, we're all eager for the onset of spring. In March, our Russell Lands On Lake Martin Naturalist activites are tailored to fit this time of year.
March Guided Nature Tours
Saturday, March 13th, 1:30pm
- Meet at Wilson Road Trailhead
Saturday, March 27th, 1:30pm
- Meet at Wilson Road Trailhead
Weary of one of the coldest winters on record? Ready for Spring? Join Naturalist Marianne Hudson for an educational foray into Russell Forest. Since Lions and Lambs are not native to our woods, in March we will liken the month to a Bobcat and a Bunny. Their respective characteristics of ferocity and timidity will be compared to the fickle March weather. Bobcats and Bunnies rely on each other as predator and prey: and both of these critters live and die in your neighborhood. We will hike through their prime habitats and search for evidence of their movements. To the delight of the Bobcats, there is more than one rabbit species in Russell Forest – we will discuss their similarities and their differences. Bobcat and Bunny skulls will be on hand for examination and impromptu discoveries always abound. This energetic hike will offer both learning and exercise. Appropriate for participants ages 5 - 105.
REGISTRATION REQUIRED! Please contact Marianne at 256.496.2710 to inquire and to register.
For all Guided Nature Tours:
It is recommended that participants have a moderate fitness level and are able to stand or walk for at least two hours. Walking pace will be relaxed with frequent stops. Comfortable, seasonally appropriate clothing and shoes are advised. Participants may also wish to bring bottled water, sunscreen and insect repellent. Binoculars and cameras are welcome. There are no bathrooms on the Forest Trails.
March Wildlife Presentations
Saturday, March 13th, 7am - 1pm Naturalist Cabin at Russell Crossroads
Saturday, March 27th, 8am - 1pm Naturalist Cabin at Russell Crossroads
Join Russell Lands On Lake Martin Naturalist, Marianne Hudson, at Russell Crossroads for an informative presentation highlighting our native wildlife. Discussion will include interesting facts about our wild neighbors and feature touchable items left behind by forest residents. This lively presentation will inspire you to appreciate the wild dramas being lived out all around us. Program includes live animals and is appropriate for all ages. No charge – everyone is welcome!
And a blacksmith too!
Saturday, March 13th, 7:30am - noon
The Russell Crossroads Blacksmith Cabin will be alive with fire, sparks and the sound of hammer on steel on the morning of March 13th. The Blacksmith Cabin is right behind the Naturalist Cabin, so you can enjoy both presentations and only have to walk a few feet between them.
If you have questions for Marianne, she can be contacted at 256.496.2710 or naturalist@russelllands.com.
