The Great Outdoors
The Brim HouseRussell Lands redefines lake home styles

Bigger was Better
The 2000s was the “bigger is better" decade, especially in real estate.  The era of easy credit led to construction of larger and larger houses.  The bigger is better trend even found its way to Lake Martin.  By 2006, builders on Lake Martin had a number of “McMansions” dotting our otherwise modest shoreline.  Slowly but surely this inventory of homes has been reduced to manageable levels.

Good Things Come in Small Packages
While the McMansion boom was getting all the attention, another trend in lake homes was quietly picking up pace.  When some people look for a lake place, they are looking for a place to retreat from the grind of city life where they can recharge their overworked emotional batteries. Sometimes, when considering size, lake lovers are looking for big water, big fun and big memories.  It seems that the size of the house is, for many, a secondary consideration. When it comes to lake houses, good things can and do come in small packages.

This desire for “smaller is better” lake homes was noticed two years ago by Russell Lands as well as our approved builders and architects. Our customers shared their lake home "wish list" with us so we could redesign for the future. Many felt that lake homes should have a cabin feel, with wood walls, ceilings and floors.  Also, each home should be sited to provide maximum view of the lake and an easy pathway from the house to the waterfront, while providing adequate pier space for boats and personal watercraft.

Breakfast on the screened porchBedroom space is not as important in a lake house since most people come to the lake to reconnect with family and friends.  Therefore the living, dining and kitchen areas should be large and open, allowing for casual and interactive gatherings.  Equally important are well-designed outdoor living areas with exceptional views of the waterfront

When Smaller is Smarter
Many prospective residents, especially given the current economic reality, also desire a smaller price tag.  The Ridge, for instance, had an average asking price of well over $1,600,000 just a few short years ago.  That price, unless situated on a prime point lot, was beyond reason for many who are drawn to the simpler lifestyle of Russell Lands On Lake Martin.

Applying the design requirements that people have shared with us, we have been able to let people have their cake and eat it too.  By designing homes without rooms that are seldom used or needed, we are able to

'right size" the house with the lot, while still providing plenty of space to entertain a large number of guests — that is the cake.  We are able to do this, and with the smarter rustic design, we are able to reduce pricing, in some cases below $1,000,000 for a Ridge or Willow Glynn home — that is a tasty cake. Search homes under $1,000,000 now >

This transition is ongoing; currently there are a limited number of new homes from which to choose.  Many more have been designed and await construction (allowing for varying degrees of customization).  We believe our approved team of builders and designers possess unequaled knowledge to provide the perfect blend of lake life and quality design features. We are excited about these new designs and invite you to see for yourself.  We believe that you will agree, that when it comes to lake houses, smaller might be better in the ways that matter most!
